We're at the westin Maui as I type. Kaanapali is a beautiful place.
The upside I can see with a 2 year old is the SPG properties have a shuttle to lahaina / whalers village so really no need for a rental car. Probably not the cheapest/most family friendly though.
The whalers hotel is under serious construction. Don't stay there.
