Who cares? I don't know about you but I didn't invite people to my wedding so that we could increase our value as a couple, assuming they'd give a gift more in value to what the booze / food on the plate is. If you don't want to spend that kind of money on people, don't, but don't assume they have to give you X dollars in reciprocate to match the meal you provide for them. That is like being the kid who won't get the other kid a birthday gift because you didn't get one. Who cares? grow up.

The value of the gift in my mind is pretty much tied to how close you are to them. If you're close, get something nice, if you're not, scale back accordingly so that you don't embarrass them.
