The 'killing in the name of god' and tableaus were a neat idea, but the psychopath payoff isn't as good as having real religious nutjobs. They put too much energy into the 'Gellar's not Real' reveal, and not enough into the rest of the story.
Brother Sam was a really interesting character, and his death was a good moment, but it did nothing for Dexter's character.
Dexter takes a swerve to Nebraska, and nothing happens.
Quinn is a douchbag, and nothing becomes of it. I thought he might reinvestigate the Kyle Butler story, but nah.
Nothing was made of the nerd intern this season.

I would also add Dexter's babysitter to that list. So much time wasted on her that went absolutely no where.
Seems obvious that the intern stuff (including the babysitter) will carry over into the next season, I just don't get why so much time was spent on it this season.
