Not sure if I agree that 2-3 is the limit. It all depends on the writing. Can they keep it fresh?

The Shield was very good all the way thru and can be argued that Season 7 was its best.

Breaking Bad has done 4 amazing seasons, each one out-doing the previous.

The Wire was strong well into its fifth season.

Sons of Anarchy just finished their strongest season and it was S4

Dexter's best season was probably S4


There are exceptions and yeah, some shows go on to long and I believe Dexter is one of them, but if done right, I got no problem with a show going between 5-7 seasons.
