I took Slicing, Underworld Trading, and Cybertech as my crew skills. So far I haven't bothered crafting any items, but I don't feel like I'm missing out. Between quest rewards and random drops, my character has been fine for gear. I'm sure outfitting yourself in the finest crafted items provides a moderate stat gain, but it's not worth the monetary sacrifice, IMO. I chose Cybertech for my crafting ability because it seemed roughly equivalent to Jewelcrafting or Enchanting in WoW -- something that's not strictly needed as you level up but will be very useful at the level cap. By then, though, I'm hoping that I'll have made enough money from Slicing to just buy all the mats I need from the AH, so not having a gathering skill won't be a problem.
