You're not screwed =D It was merely a suggestion.
In the beta, when I took the crafting skill + the two gatherings that supported it, I ran out of money really really quickly. Consider that it's 300 credits to send out your companion to do a treasure hunting expedition, and it adds up really fast, unless you're able to either sell it on the AH or have some other way to make credits. Then you also need enough of the archaelogy materials to level up your artificing.
You need 44k at lvl 25 to get your speeder, and keeping crafting up to where you can make worthwhile equipment while saving that much is quite the task.
I'm not saying it's not possible. For example, you could sell some of your treasure hunting resources on the AH, or reverse engineer some artificing thing until it's useful enough for people to pay credits for it (purple quality). But slicing for lockboxes is just the easiest way to generate money if you don't want to deal with selling stuff on the galactic trade market.
