From everything I heard this kid was a control freak in the relationship, he was the typical creep that puts on the phony lovey dovey front facing great guy look, while he imposes his will on the girl in the background.
He was a monster, not a jilted lover, he lost control of her, but he didn't lose control of himself.
Crime of obsession would be more like it, he was a jilted stalker.

In another case a few years ago in northern Alberta, with a man killing his ex, he described himself as feeling a great sense of relief after it was done, that he'd taken care of a lingering, recurring problem and that he was back in control again.
I remember a pyschologist at the time saying that was not an unusual reaction in that situation.
