Yeah at no point during the negotiations did I feel good about moving Datsyuk, nor do I feel great about it now. This deal is all about the future for us. Next year we will struggle to fit our salaries under the cap, so it makes sense to me to move an older star like Datsyuk for two guys whose salaries put together fall $2 million shy of Datsyuk's.
Niederreiter is a great prospect we are very glad to pick up, while Grimaldi is....5'6". We wish him all the best, but didn't like how high risk he is to bust. Not to mention his views on women and their bodies. We in Montreal are strong supporters of women's right to show off their bodies if they so choose, and want players to feel good about bringing their wives to the games and team events wearing as little as they choose.
Simmonds is good. I like him.
Smithson was not doing great in Montreal, was about to lose his roster spot, and bought me a draft pick.
Patrick Sharp will be happy about moving up from the third line.
I may have just been taken in by my compulsion to trade and negotiate whenever deals are suggested or players are made available.
edit: Oh, and Plekanec. He's pretty good. Montreal's top scorer. Not old. Not too ridiculous of a contract. We would be THRILLED if the opportunity to replace Datsyuk with someone else came by soon.
