Two things:
-Of course the friends are going to say he was a nice guy etc. He was their friend, they're not just going to say, yeah he was a big ol ######.
-Secondly read the "Things that randomly creep into your mind" thread, there are a lot of posts in there about knowing at any second you could run your car into someone else on the highway and kill them, or beat up someone randomly on the street. Everyone has thoughts like these, but rational people repress these thoughts and know "if i did this, bad things would happen" so they don't act on them, whereas some people can't sense the horribleness that would happen if they acted on these thoughts. It would be interesting to hear if the killer had any alcohol or drugs in his system because they could extremely distort his behaviour.
