I think people struggle with the idea that it is completely possible, and even likely, that someone can be nice most of the time but still do something horrible.

I doubt if there is a single person here who isn't nice most of the time, but a dick every once of a while (some more than others). The thing is, most rational people know when and where to draw the line. Every once in a while though, some otherwise rational people lose sight of that and cross the line. We all hope it will never be us of course.
