In the US, the RIAA has requested that any digital device to record radio (or video, but they have only recently been connected) have the ability to read a broadcast flag. Their primary reason they state is they are afraid people can make perfect copies of any song played and won't buy the album.
However the public has gotten used to recording off of radio, and now expect to be able to do that, regardless of whether the source is digital or not.
I know when I was growing up most of my music was taped off am radio, until I got an after school job and disposable income.
