I thought that the Joker that Ledger played was really different then the comic book character who to me just killed in the name of some cosmic joke that only he found funny.

Ledger's character to me wasn't as much a joker, as he was a hyper intelligent curious psychopathic phsycology student who really wanted to see how people ticked while getting a reaction that he expected to get. I think that's why he lost his focus when one of the boats didn't explode in the end, but then he remembered that he had still changed Dent and he was out there, his last great creation.

Its sad that its rare that Hollywood makes movies where the villian is the key focus (Payback could have been that movie but they totally softened it) I would love to see the back story on Nolan's joker, because you know that none of those "Do you know how I got these scars" was true, there was something much more horrifying that burned all of the empathy out of the Joker.
If you haven't already yet, you should read "The Killing Joke". Basically tells the origin of the Joker in one plot-line and another which involves Batman. The book is an absolute must read for any fan of Batman. I think I'll go over it again tonight.

Note: Nolan has already said, in multiple interviews, that Harvey died at the end of TDK, so don't get your hopes up people.
