I don't think its his drumming, its the snare in a few albums that sounds horrible.

The snare almost ruins Death Magnetic as well. But I believe it was the mastering / engineering that destroyed the snare on Death Magnetic.

It's really too bad considering it even sounds better in Ride the Lightning, which is pretty raw.
