Do base layers - thermal underwear - Fleece - Windbreaker if you are really concerned about it. Once you start playing you can take off the fleece because you will warm up. As you have to wear a helmet according to the rules pick up one of the lululemon running toques which will actually keep your head from freezing and will fit under your helmet with no problems at all.

Bring a couple of extra layers of thermals because you will start to sweat and afterwards you will freeze if you have nothing to change into. Also get some hot pockets - not for your hands but for your skates if you have to leave them outside pop them into your skates half an hour before you take to the ice and they will have thawed enough for you to comfortably put your feet into them, cold skates suck.
