If it's Wednesday, the next Friday you encounter will be in two days.

If it's Wednesday, the next day would be Thursday. You wouldn't say I'll see you on the next day and then show up on Friday.

The next round of golf I play will be today. It won't be the second round I play.

If my friend says he'll pay me the $10 he owes me the next time he sees me, he'll pay me the first time he sees me, not the second time.
Wrong.

The weekend is part of this week, hence the the name "weekend". So it's this weekend. The last weekend was last weekend. The weekend after next is next weekend.

However, socially, next weekend means the upcomming weekend. It's wrong though.
