She has a ton of epub books that she has got for her iPod, so I am assuming she would want to use them on her Kindle, but Kindle doesn't support ePub without converting, with something like Calibre, correct?
She also gets stuff from the library, which Amazon claims is possible, but only with "Kindle Books" - which implies they need to be .amz format, right?
Is there another reader that should be considered instead? I want to keep it under $100 if possible, unless there is a really good reason.

Have you considered the Kobo touch? It's dropped to $99 recently and supports ePub and PDF.
Pretty much identical to the Nook.
