If you can match the plug and polarity, you can pretty much match capacity by size Big devices/laptops/external 3.5" drives use big power supplies, smaller devices use mid-size ones, and tiny devices use the smallest wall warts. It's pretty rare that any switching power supply today that looks like its the right physical size for the device isn't going to deliver enough current.
