Between him pointing his gun at Rick and going off the deep end I don't think it would be a stretch for the others to have doubts about Shane.
Also when Dale tells Laurie about him believing that Shane shot Otis you know she is going to think that as well, based on her past problems with him. I still think there is some background from Shane that we are going to see down the road, some incident before the zombies that shows he's always been a problem.

Ya I could see that, something about him being a crooked cop that Rick didn't know about. He always talks about being made for this world, eluding to the fact that he does have some kind of prior experience in a survival situation or survival of the fittest.
