I once got called out for calling someone brown. It was after a Corporate Challenge volleyball game, and I said "Man, that brown girl on the other team was really good". But then my co-worker was like "That's racist". In my head I was like "Why?" I'm simply stating the colour of her skin. Would it be better if I called her Indian? She might not be. She could be Pakistani, which would be more insulting to her if I called her Indian. Maybe she's from the Caribbean. I dunno. I don't see anything wrong with describing someone based on the colour of their skin. I'm not gonna get all insulted if someone called me "the guy with black hair." As far as I'm concerned, calling someone black is okay, just as I don't care if someone calls me "that Asian guy" so long as you're not stating it like I'm sort of tteerrrible inferior creature who will eat your children. It's all about intent really.
