They are harmful to a degree, so how should "society" deal with it?

Get the government to throw people in jail for hurting others feelings? That is a slippery slope to shutting down free speech my friend.

Hardcore forms of racism (segregation, black slavery) have thankfully already been eliminated from western civilization. All it is now is insult words and the media hype to follow it up. We, as adults should know how to deal with petty insults. If insults turn into violence, then the law should step in, but that's it imo.

I'm all for personal responsibility.
