Default Plumbing? Clogged bathroom sink.

Had a real slow bathroom sink drain. The wife had tried the Drano type products. I tried to snake it out with one of those 24" plastic jig saw blade type snakes. It seemed to move a little better for a few days, then slowed again. Today I removed the trap and cleaned it out, it wasn't plugged, just some goo around the edges. I also clean the down pipe and around the drain, again just the expected goo around the edges. So I tried to snake further into the wall past the trap and the snake didnt seem to be moving. I was able to grab some goo with the snake and my fingers. Now nothing is moving.

Do I dare try to push further in with something a little more ridgid? I was thinking maybe some garden hose. Or do I need to buy one of those augers? Try a sink plunger? Hire a pro?
