I thought they had established in the first season that everyone is already infected, and that so long as you're dead and you're brain is in tact that you will become a zombie regardless. Hence the guy who hung himself becoming a zombie. Getting bit just meant you would die sooner from a vicious infection caused by the bite.
Or am I just making stuff up from other zombie flicks I've seen? My girlfriend and I went on quite the zombie flick binge after Season 1 lol.
