There are a few places that people have their divided loyalties too. I like Katz's but admittedly haven't been to many others. Carnegie Deli was good, and is also close to the hotel you mentioned at the start. Mile End in Brooklyn is actually a Montreal style deli and is delicious, I've only had it catered so I imagine it's even better fresh.
