There have been scumbags running boxing since it began. Boxing has always had one foot in the grave just carrying on until the next big name takes it over.
Before Ali we had Sony Liston. Liston was an ex con who was brutal and had no charisma. He died of heroin overdose in Las Vegas. He took the title from Floyd Patterson. Patterson was probably the last of the sub 200 Lb.ers and he was managed by a guy who knew his limitations and so Patterson never did face any really tough opposition until Liston.
The thing is boxing was in the doldrums until Ali came along and made it headliner news again. Maybe another charismatic heavyweight fighter will come along. Right now all the heavyweight action seems to be in Europe so no one gives a crap.
