There's a reason why so many "actors" in L.A. have to wait tables on the side. Aside from a small percentage, Art/Music sadly doesn't pay (especially in Calgary). I'm sure your job is much better than 3rd rate side jobs I would have to hold to supplement my income if I tried to do my arty side things. I also was a marketing major when I started out at the U of C but I really only liked the creative part (as a graphic artist) and in my last marketing job, I'm terrible at sales and I'm told the big marketing firms here treat their creative talent as disposable and pay even worse.
Anyway, I've switched fields into IT and I know some people making 100K in this industry in their early 30s. My buddy grew up on a farm and has no post secondary but charges $200/hr as a consultant doing what I'm aiming for.
We are pretty lucky living in Calgary (despite the lack of good weather, the lack of culture, the usual knocks against Calgary, etc.) in that money is flowing through industry and if you work hard and break into something that can tap into the O&G network in some way, you have a chance to do well.
