I'm not sure about you, but I'd be pretty fing useless at actually making a bow. It would be inaccurate as all hell, with crooked arrows and a poor frame.
Also, if you haven't used a bow before... archery is a tough skill to master. Using a bow takes some skill - crossbows on the other hand are so simple to use, just load, aim and fire.
In medieval times, even though crossbows had a slower rate of fire than normal bows, one of the reasons they were so common was because any idiot could use one easily with little training.

I'm not suggesting you pick up a bow, I'm suggesting this guy pick up a gun. If this guy is a rural hunting, live off the land type, and has his own crossbow, I don't think it's a leap to suggest he can also handle a draw-bow.
How many crossbow bolts are you going to come across scavenging? Even in Canada, I could make my way across the country with a .22 and never run out of ammo.
Hell, if I had a .22 and a pump action chambered for 3 inch shells, I'd die from my lack of speed being bogged down so much by the ammo I'd collected.
If there was a zombie apocalypse right now, right this second. I could grab enough ammunition to hold me over for a significant length of time in a 40 minute round trip walk, and this is in one of the least firearm dense environments in the country, let alone southern Georgia.
All of this is besides the real point of him being surrounded by people with guns.
On the plus side, this show has provided me with a great soapbox for tangents.
