Probably covering the obvious here but I had the same issue at first. Re-start your computer. Make sure iTunes is open when you plug in your iPad. Not sure if it's a glitch or not as my iTunes has been running kinda funky lately but if iTunes is open on my computer when I plug my iPad into an outlet, it works every time.
While we are on the subject, I have gone through my entire iTunes library correcting song names and album names so I can get the album art working properly. Odd thing, 2 songs that I've downloaded from iTunes show up on my iPad as not having artwork unless you actually tap on the album to open it and then it's there. Any idea why?
