But ya, all of those soldiers they have seen should all have 9mm handguns at least and all of them would have been carrying the same ammo. Same with their assault rifles.

I wasn't specific enough as I was trying not to spoil anything for viewers who are behind, but I was referencing the CDC episodes. There was all kinds of munition lying around. I would have likely stuck around after the explosion just to see what I could salvage.
As people have pointed out, however, it really depends on how dire the situation is. If it was me, I'd take a certain amount of risk to ensure I was well armed.
