My mother is 80 and she has stayed with my dad in spite of the times he would beat her and us. The endless abuse and drinking was pure hell for a child to grow up in.
I wish she would have left him, but she was afraid to and we had no place to go.
Back then if society would be more like today and not like you wish it was my mother may have had a chance or at least an option.
