And regarding the upgrading vs. starting clean argument, I ended up going the easy, non-OCD route and just upgraded because, based on the comments here it seemed like iOS doesn't really require a fresh start like, say, Windows would. As mentioned earlier in the thread, my passwords were not carried over, which is fine, and everything else made it across nicely. A few apps were being a tad flaky (Skype camera didn't work initially, probably because the 3G never had that option, Twitter was a bit glitchy, etc.) but it was the exception and not the norm. And deleting and re-installing solved it painlessly. The new iCloud storage of previously-downloaded apps is nice as you can look at the apps that aren't currently on your phone and reinstall them with ease.
