That's the way I always feel with a new computer. I am always hesitant to transfer settings over as it may also transfer some glitches, bloat, etc. Like you, I never know if there is any proof, but it just feels better starting fresh.
Test messages aren't important as I have had to delete most of them to keep my 3G from becoming completely useless, and all of my email, calendars, contacts are synced through IMAP, Exchange, etc. so it will just be a matter of entering in my login credentials again.
