A couple of cousins of mine - male and female - have lived there for decades in nice homes, one working as a bus driver to the oilsands and the other as a veterinary tech while her husband is at Suncor. Raised their families there without problem.
It' not a bad place necessarily . . . . . it's the pressures that are being brought to bear by local governments not allowing additional housing and infrastructure that might be the problem. People necessary to the functioning of the Oilsands shouldn't have to fly in on a weekly basis or live in the bush.
Combine that with its status as a typical boom town for young transients and all the problems that can come from that segment of the population.
Fort McMurray is a great place for young people to go and get a start in life . . . . but I don't think I'd want to live there past 30 years of age. I said that about Grande Prairie too . . . . and I left when I was 27.
