This method may kick up some errors for some people. This is the method I used.
Download the DMG and mount it. Copy the ipsw to your desktop.
Back up your iPhone.
Download and install iTunes 10.5 beta 9.
Plug in your phone.
Put the phone in DFU mode by:
Hold Power and Home Buttons for 3 seconds
let go of the power button and hold home for 10 seconds
let go of home and the phone's screen should be black with no backlight on at all
Your phone should show up in iTunes but only the summary section will show.
Option click
Restore (Mac) or Shift click (Windows) and navigate to the ipsw file. RESTORE not update!
The phone will update to iOS 5.
Follow the remaining instructions and choose to restore from iTunes back up when prompted.
