I've heard lots of positive recommendations for Buffalo networking products in the past, but I don't know it its legal issues are behind it.

Personally I would stay away from Buffalo.
I've tried a lot of their routers in the past, and to me they are all junk. Netgear has some good stuff that I would give a try. The WDR3700 I believe is pretty good.
