There was no staged break in - the prosecution for some reason in Italy can make statements like this, as if they are true. As you have heard in many posts here, they were innocent, the entire crime was committed during a break-in. They caught this person, but they only caught him after they over committed to jailing Knox (DNA testing determined Guede was the killer). In order to cover up their overzealous interrogation, they threw out the video. The real murderer (Guede) had his conviction decreased because he withdrew earlier statements that Knox had nothing to do with the crime, instead he said she was a part of it and his sentence was dropped in half. Guede initially said that he had consensual sex with the victim and during a bathroom break she was murdered by whoever broke in. He got scared and left the country. Unfortunately for Knox this confession did not fit in with the story the prosecutor thought up, so Guede had a bargaining chip, confess to the made up story that implicates two other people and get out of jail sooner.
The prosecutor is well known to create crazy court cases of stories he imagines, and then picks little details to fit his story. The story in this case involved violent sex, thus Guede needed some more partners for the crime to be committed.
