Apple doesn't force people to buy new phones, they just cease to give older phones the newest features (which is why I'm shocked 3GS is still getting support). It's not as though one day you'd wake up and your 3GS would totally be bricked.
This isn't a practice exclusive to Apple. If Apple did lose you as a customer though where would you go to get a different treatment? Android updates only being available on certain models isn't going away, and Blackberry is... well... Blackberry.
Just for those who are disappointed and will wait for the 5... what features are you looking for exactly?
