Thunderbird and Lightning have worked pretty well for me. I use the Google calendar extension in Lightning, so I can set up my calendar in Google and access it via Lightning or other calendar apps like on my phone. All email accounts are set up as IMAP so I can access them via smartphone or desktop.

I am starting to find the constant updates for Thunderbird, and other Mozilla products to be bordering on the annoyance level of Adobe updates.
