We proposed the route 17 to go further along 11th/12th Avenue, and enter downtown at either 1st Street East or 4th Street East as opposed to the 1st Street West/5th Street West combination.

In our discussions with Calgary Transit, they actually were willing to propose much the same as what we were (enter downtown at 4th Street East). For the northeast part of the route, they would actually create a new route (basically severing the route 17 at downtown), which is presented in the two options in the survey (this is why they don't appear to connect to anywhere near 4th Street East). Part of their reluctance was because they wanted to determine if the northeast riders were okay with the route not continuing through to the Beltline and off to the Shaganappi Point Station area. As to which one keeps the route number 17, who knows?

The two options in the survey:

The new route they proposed for the northeast section, as it would continue west from the two options presented in the survey, would would go south along 5th Street West to 12th Avenue, head east on 12th for a block and then loop back north along 4th Street West.

We'll be holding an open house regarding the changes to route 17, tentatively scheduled for October 29th, in the Beltline.

Thanks for letting me know about this. I'm now telling everyone that I can possibly tell to go to Calgary transit website and get them to go against such changes to the route 17. The only really good experience I have had with Calgary Transit is with the morning commute I have on route 17, and I go down to 5th ave SW. If the route changes, and I am now dropped off in the east, it makes taking transit practically useless. I would be forced to look at parking options, and I moved to the location I did in order to avoid that kind of bull.

Not only that, but the route actually creates a great sense of community that I haven't experienced anywhere else. I have met most of the friends I have in the neighbourhood waiting at the bus stop, and all but one get off further down the line than 4 st east. Unless Calgary transit makes the route seperate from the one that goes down the beltline, it would ruin everything.

I understand where you are coming from. The beltline needs better routes. I support that wholeheartedly - I used to live in the beltline. But whatever you do, please don't mess up our neighbourhood to make minor changes to yours. It doesn't have to be an either/or situation. But if it does become one, I will not let it go.
