Library funding ‘almost secured’

Calgary’s mayor hinted yesterday that ground could break on the Central Library sometime next year, deeming funding for the $250-million project “almost secured.”
The mayor made the comments while exiting a public event at the current downtown library location.
“We have got a little bit of work to do on money and a little to do on the plan,” he said. “The centennial year (for the Calgary Public Library in 2012) would be a good year to make a significant announcement.”
The city has already publicly committed $175 million towards constructing the new East Village facility and the provincial government has looked at pitching in the remainder in combination with another cultural facility.
