Is it Huntingwhales' responsibility to keep it confidential? Far as I'm concerned he's betraying his friend, not the psycho killer.

I've personally reported on an injury of a Flames player that likely could have gotten my friend fired (worked at a clinic). IMO I'm responsible to her only, she's responsible to the player and her employer.
Agreed, it's the responsibility of the person who has the duty of confidentiality to maintain that confidentiality. There are situations where people who learn confidential things are held responsible, but that's not really the norm. Huntingwhale's friend is putting his/her job, and depending on their position accreditation and career, on the line by disclosing details regardless of how benign they appear to be.

I'd also say that you were a pretty terrible friend if you knew you had a duty to her to keep something quiet and still ran to CP to post about it.
