Maybe it was just that it was a piece of junk to start with (Dodge Caliber). My car has a 4-speed automatic which makes it feel like the dark ages when I drive it. I find the newer rental cars I seem to get (Fords, usually) have 6+ speeds and drive so much nicer. I saw the new Charger is going to get an 8-speed automatic. That should make its mileage better than it would get with a manual, and the performance should be fantastic!

I had a manual on my last two cars and don't miss it TBH. I hate being stuck in traffic shifting from first to second to first to second. Maybe it's just me. If I was driving on coast roads with no traffic, sure, way better, but traffic and lights are my daily drive.

ETA: found the Motoring episode with the RVR review here.
I took a look a come cars and was surprised how close the mileage gap has closed between autos and manuals. I still prefer manuals. It sounds strange but I have a bit of trouble driving autos sometimes. If I don't think about it, I find myself stepping off the throttle at intervals while accelerating for no reason at all.
