Was going to say this. I have had a pair of shoes repaired when one our dogs chewed the heel.
That said, there's not a lot of repeat business, or, margin on some of that stuff. Certianly not enough for mall stores to cover rent, unless they cut a lot of keys or sell a lot of shoe laces, or have some side business that provides some item that is illegal, and requires the correct wink and nod to obtain. There's a place in an apartment building between 8th and 9th street on 6th Ave that advertises shoe repair and cleaning. I want to go in there once and see if there is a crack on the ceiling like that episode of Seinfeld.
The guy in our area is in a place the size of a phonebooth though, and been there probably 20 or 30 years, so likely gets a good deal on rent.
Deerfoot Mall, Westbrook Mall have been covered...Deer Valley hasn't. A small ancient Zellers. Co-op at the other end, the requisite lounge that has VLT's as its main draw. A lottery booth, and the random mom and pop clothing/antique stores, and of course some schlub in one of those "As seen on TV" stores, who ended up buying a bunch of Ab Rollers and George Forman Grills, trying to make a margin on them.
All 3 are basically this era's version of MacLeod Mall.
+1 to retail computer stores...there's one on 9th Ave in the bottom of one of those apartment buildings. It looks like they still sell MS-Dos systems.
