Volume. If you look at Dollartree (A Fortune 500 Company) in the States or even Dollarama here in Canada it is a very profitable business. In the States they are taking a lot of business from Wallmart as people are shopping down. It is a big trend and even companies like Staples are now touting out dollar items etc. to try to get people back in the stores. Besides, everyone shops like they are a millionaire when they are in a dollar store and it makes people feel good
