I wouldn't go so far as to call the OP a loser, but he should have assumed that without confirmation of the cancellation, the baker was going to go ahead and make the cake. A message doesn't cut it. If I had gotten the machine on my attempt to cancel, I wouldn't have even bothered leaving a message as I wouldn't want to screw up the situation and have a possible outcome like this. I would have gone with the original plan.
That said, the bakers reaction was pretty funny.
