This part of the story isn't clear on it, how can we determine that the cake did indeed take 4 hours and not the 1.5 to 2 they told him? Perhaps the message was left at 8pm after they waited for a while and wondered where he was? Now if the message had said "We've had your cake ready since 5:30 and are wondering where you are?" that would clear things up nicely.
