I think I can say many of us have been there before. It sure doesn't make it any easier for you, but keep in mind our thoughts are with you. Pets are so often a part of our family.
As hard as it may be to not be able to say goodbye in person; keep in mind you are doing what's best for him by letting his suffering end. And if was as good a pet as you talk about; I'm sure he deserves that.
