There are hundreds of thousands of migrant black workers in Libya. One source said that near 1/3 of the population is black. Very few of these people are actually fighting for Ghadafi. Amnesty International and other groups have said that most of these people are foreign workers being pulled form their homes, and beaten, killed, or imprisoned.
The rebels are using the "mercenary" excuse to murder and detain large numbers of these sub-Saharan black Africans. The various tribes in eastern Libya are fanatical Islamic racists and wish to rid Libya of blacks, almost genocidal in nature. Ghadafi ran a secular state and alowed the black workers into Libya.
This is an ugly civil war...and I have my doubts that a "democracy" will emerge in Libya. Egypt has failed in that respect also....
