WW1 really defined our country as a independent country to our successes at Vimy Ridge. WW2 cemented Canada as a country to be recognized with out actions not only in the Atlantic Convoys and Juno Beach but our headlong invasion into Italy. Canada then swung above its weight in Korea, and Afghanistan.
But you can't understand the horrors of war unless you truly study it, you also need to learn that at time war though terrible is something that is sadly necessary.
Canada has never established itself through its diplomatic efforts, Peace Keeping though a Canadian creation, has ended up being an abject failure. But there are entire countries that are incredibly grateful for the Canadian's in helmets and boots that came with one hand reached out to offer help and aid and a sword in the other to defend human rights and dignity.
It needs to be taught, and understood and we can never forget that young men put down their plows and shovels and pens to do what they believed was the right thing.

I know Canada's war history inside and out; I contribute on a number of internet boards...
...the level of ignorance among many of the "young 'uns" (who pop up on those sites) is frankly...disheartening.
