I mean you're adopting a dog that's potentially going to be with you for well over a decade.

I volunteered at the humane society for a year or so and there were so many impulse buys that were taken to the pound because people didn't realize how much work fluffy actually was going to be... it drove myself and the staff nuts.... especially at Christmas time.

If everyone bought responsibly and did their research there would be no more puppy mills with awful conditions.

Yah, folks are crazy if they buy from a Pet store (Dog farms are risky...risky) However.....Petsmart of the world do have association to Adoption Agencies. Dogs are clearly marked which are the rescues.

Yep, for the folks who are not 100% sure if they can handle a dog. Call an adoption agency and go with the program called "foster to own".

Adoption agency get their dogs from "farmers" and "Reserves"... or from some poor chap who never fixed their dog... Why not buy from the same person. This will ultimately help the Adoption agencies as they won't have to go and rescue so many dogs... (i.e in the dump or left in camp grounds etc).
