Your friend should have given 30 days notice and if giving notice during a tenancy month, the notice wouldn't be effective until the end of the following tenancy month. In effect the landlord may not have to accept termination of the tenancy until the end of September if notice was given in August. (Not negating that the landlord sounds like a deadbeat who spent the deposit)

You can give notice on Aug 1, that you will be out at the end of Aug. On Aug 2, the earliest date becomes the end of September.

So, "beginning of the month" could easily still mean that leaving at the end of August was acceptable.
